Happy Mother's Day

With Jana and Vanessa both (yay!) currently in a 'bun in the oven' state, and with my two little girls become more precious/hilarious by the day, Mother's Day is truly a day of rejoicing for us gals over here at VWM. In special honor of this extra special day, I teamed up once again with MDK Photography and invited a few of our friends with their little ones over for tea & cake, and to celebrate the adventure we call motherhood.

I used the occasion to show off my Great Grandmother's china set (ah-mazing), a flurry of pink flowers, a few of my favorite collected vintage vases, and some newly acquired antlers. Every time I use the china it makes me think of my Mother, and how I used to beg to bring out and dust off these beautiful pieces of our family history.

To give the kiddos a special place of there own, I tented vintage table cloths and curtains from one of our apple tree's lower branches. Paired with a chandelier, it's a little girls perfect hideout (and photo op for us Moms).

I set the table in the FAVORITE corner of my backyard, amongst all our fruit trees. Though a month ago I fully expected to do this shoot through the lacy light of spring leaves, Montana weather decided to hold back on spring for one more week. Good thing Meghan can capture any moment with grace. Now bring on the late summer sun, I see some alfresco dinner parties in our future.

And because "a party without cake is just a meeting' (thank you Julia Childs), I baked a simple chocolate cake, and layered in orange vanilla cream cheese frosting. YUM.

To all of you other Moms, Moms to Be, Grandmas and Great Grandmothers, we hope this Sunday is filled with family, love, and hopefully a bit of cake.

XO - Rae

Vanessa's Home Renovation: Part Four

We were so excited as we were tearing up carpet to find hard wood EVERYWHERE. Unfortunately, there were some spots that were too rotten and had to be replaced. So the entire left side (kitchen, dining and sitting room) got new wood floors. I was very nervous about how we would pay for it, but we sold all the cabinets from the kitchen and that gave us a nice chunk to work with.

So here it is! All nice, new wood and even some primed walls. It was starting to get exciting at this point. My husband bought the same wood to match the old wood on the other side of the house.

Here's the kitchen...gutted and primed. For the kitchen, we purchased the least expensive wood since my plans are to paint it. I MUST have my kitchen sink under a window, so that will go to the left there (where it was originally). But I want the fridge to sort of hide behind the wall to the left instead of right by that green door where it was previously. That back wall will eventually have a couple windows looking into the backyard. Right now there is an old carriage house attached there, but I HAVE to be able to easily see into the backyard...plus I just want MORE WINDOWS!

Here is the "right side" of the house. The wall is gone and now we have our "Great Room". How funny it looks right now!

We REALLY wanted to have a professional come in and sand and stain all the hardwood. That made me nervous as well. Wasn't sure how we were going to pay for that, but somehow, God provided us with enough money and we found a guy that we LOVED to do the floors for us. So while Jana and my mom and I are away doing our first market in Salt Lake City...

....my husband sends me text pictures. Which one??

There was a big surprise waiting for me when I got home from SLC....the most beautiful floors ever!!

The Shops at Station 8

Ever since I moved away from the lovely state of Montana, there is one place that I dearly miss shopping at.  The Shops at Station 8 in Columbia Falls, Montana has to be one of my all time favorite antiquing spots.

Colette and the girls style everything so wonderfully, and they are always changing things around so it never seems like the same place twice!

PS...these amazing photos were taken by the talented Marianne Wiest. So good.

So much inspiration....such an amazing space for it! I mean..those walls? C'mon. IT'S IN A HISTORIC TRAIN DEPOT......!!

Did you know they host special events as well? In fact, their next event is a Spring Open House on May 11th from 9-5! A perfect time to get those last minute Mothers Day gifts...or even to just make it an outing FOR Mothers Day! Be sure to check out their Facebook page for all of the details!

Word has it that they'll also be launching their new WEBSITE and BLOG on May 11th as well! (also see their Facebook page for details on the launch)

It really is a magical place. Until their website/blog launches, you can visit them on Facebook (let them know we sent you!) and if you're in the area...here's their address and phone number!
