Vanessa's Christmas Home Tour...And Pickled Wood Floors!

I'm sorry for being so far behind on my Christmas home post (absolutely NO excuse!!), except that I really wanted to refinish our floors before decorating for Christmas. And we made it happen!!

First I want to talk about these amazing floors! I really should post a before and after of my floors but you can see them here on my last post I did. We refinished them when we bought the house 3 years ago and I chose a dark stain because I love dark wood against white walls.

I do love some contrast, and I always thought the dark wood was gorgeous. However, after over a year of getting frustrated because I couldn't get my living and dining room to look right, I realized it was because the look I was going for was airy and bright, and the dark floors were messing that up.

I realized that refinishing your floors twice in 3 years is a bit extreme. However, we bought this ugly old house to fix up into our dream home and it didn't made sense to live with these floors I didn't like for years...especially when we have pretty much completed the house.

My husband put up a fight, and rightfully so, but I knew this was not something I was just going to change my mind on in another couple of years, and once I convinced him of that he was ok.

Our floors are new fir (old ones were not salvageable), and the formula we used on them was 4 parts Minwax "Pickled Oak" to 1 part Minwax "Puritan Pine". I cannot tell you how much I love how they turned out! But also a peace I have...like I can breathe for the first time in 3 years. I guess that's why they call it "airy" (lol).

So enough about the floors...although I'm sure I'll go on about them again, I went pretty minimal for Christmas this year (well at least that was my intention). We literally put a bunch of vintage ornaments on the tree and then I took them all off cause it just seemed too much.
We cut our tree from my in-laws backyard like we usually do. I really like imperfect trees, but somehow I picked out a pretty perfect one.

I love my brass bells that I ordered last Christmas season from Etsy.com

Very simple, linen stockings are hung by blue ribbon.

Aren't these floors just so creamy? I also finally painted this room "White Dove" (#OC-17) by Benjamin Moore in Regal Select Pearl Finish. I painted the walls and trim the same for a very clean look. I cannot tell you the difference it makes! I didn't realize white walls would be so very different than slightly off-white walls. They are! It makes for such a clean, minimal and bright palette.

Everything is "merry and bright" at this house. Wishing you all the best Holiday season!

xo,
Vanessa

  3. I am over the top in love with your low key decorations. I went minimal last year, but have gone a little heavy on decor this year. I think it's because we leave on vacation on December 17 and don't fly home until Christmas Day. We are having an all family adventure in lieu of gifts, but there will be no Christmas decor for us.

Our floors need refinishing although we love the rustic look of the 88 year old floors. Did you do them yourselves? Did you move out and move all of your furniture out while the work was being done?

    1. That's a great idea for family to go on a vacation for Christmas! Love it! I was going to do the floors myself but we found a guy that was really pretty cheap and I just didn't have the time, knowledge and experience to be confident in doing them myself. It took about 4 days total. We moved all our furniture into the sunroom and guest room and kitchen. I would take my three little ones every morning and we'd spend the day with Grandma and then come home at night. It's one of those things that I feel is well worth the money to get done professionally. Hope that helps! Merry Christmas!!

  7. LOVE your home. Is the tufted chair by the door with the little chandy hanging by it by any chance available on line somewhere and is it comfy? I am in search for a chair and that one looks perfect.

    1. That chair is from Worldmarket.com. I'll bet they still have it. At first I didn't think it was the most comfortable because you can't sit back on it and still touch the floor with your feet. But it ended up being my go-to chair. I love to curl up on it or put my feet up while working on the computer. So I have changed my mind. I love this chair!

  8. I want your home. For my home. But also for every photo shoot. It would be a truly lovely natural light studio. Drooling.

  12. So, so beautiful!!! Your home has such an amazing peacefulness about it - spaces are just so calming, bright and serene. The new lighter floors really did make a huge difference, they are lovely, but I do have to say that your dark floors were beautiful also. You have created a very welcoming home , and your holiday decor adds just the right touch!

  15. I love how your floors turned out, Vanessa! I just recently painted my basement White Dove and I love it so much.....now the rest of my house is too off white and I want it all the same, but ugghh, can't imagine painting it all! I might have to just gradually do one room at a time. I'm doing touches of blue as well in my house this year and keeping it simple♥

  16. I love everything you do! I'm itching to paint room white (most of our walls are BM Natural cream which is pale grey-beige) but I'm betting my hubby won't be on board. Maybe the guest room so he doesn't have to live in it! I absolutely adore your style. It is so inspiring.

  17. I am just dying over what a difference those floors made. Our hardwood floors have been a pain in my side for a long time, and this is exactly the look I've wanted to go for. Your change made such a huge impact, I've decided to save up and make the switch, even though it feels like I'll be wasting perfectly good floors. Will you be sharing more details? I'd love to know where you got the wood, the type and more info on how you finished it.

  18. I absolutely love the lighter wood against the white in your decor! You're right: the effect is very airy and so soothing. My husband and I both love dark floors, but seeing this reminds me of how much I also love the light look - and it might be time to start convincing my husband to like this color as well. Thank you for sharing your absolutely lovely home with us! http://www.montgomeryflooring.net/hardwoodflooring

  19. I absolutely love what you did to your floors! I am in the process of laying new fir floors in my entire home and have a couple questions I'm hoping you could answer about your process (I know this is an old blog but here to hoping you read this!). I want to know how you got this end look so here we go- How many coats of your 4:1 stain mix did you apply? Did you sand in between or after? What did you use as your final top coat?
Any information you could share with me would be amazing! trail and error is my second resort :)
